What I learned in this course

In this course, I completed reading the text Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy written by Gerald Corey, which helped me have a better understanding of different types of theories and how they can benefit or help potential clients I may have. From all the theories studied in this course, there are some theories that I would like to apply that would be beneficial in helping me guide my clients to the right path.

Person-centered therapy: In this therapy, Carl Roger recommended that the client would have the best help if the therapist motivates the client to concentrate on the problem then on the interpretation that others have on the situation. To have good results Carl Roger believed

Albert Ellis considers that there are specific symptoms that will show the therapist how the client may view events and situations that bring out unhealthy behaviors or thoughts. An example of this is a client that is dealing with depression. When I become a therapist, I would use cognitive and behavioral therapy that will allow me to touch base on prior conditions from any environment or trauma that will not allow the client to control unhealthy behaviors through rational thoughts. Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) plays a big role in Cognitive behavior therapy because it explains how beliefs, interpretations, and reactions to life situation can bring a client to have irrational beliefs that starts in a clients childhood and creates these unhealthy thoughts that can bring a client to have a depression. I consider that REBT therapy can be beneficial to the client because it can help the client have a rational emotive imagery which means the client can picture themselves how they really want to behave in life. This would bring the client a step forward to change any unhelpful thought or behavior they may have. An example of this is a client that suffers from depression. The goal for psychoanalytic therapy is to bring the unconscious to the conscious mind, which means that as the therapist that I will be my duty is to help my client understand their true feelings and also experience it. Also, I will help my client explore unconscious feelings and painful memories that are too difficult for the conscious mind to process and find ways for the client to find solutions to the problem.

With my clients I would need to be careful in how I would approach the problem with the client because the client may develop defenses, like denial and projection that can create more harm then good to the client.This is where psychodynamic approach comes in place. Psychodynamic approach is made to help people that have various problems, but tends to be more effective in the treatment of more specific issues that are involved with any mental health disorder (
