What is Bribery?
Bribery is defined by Black 's Law Dictionary as the offering, giving, receiving, or soliciting of any item of value to influence the actions of an official or other person in charge of a public or legal duty.
Bribery is one form of corruption that plagues organizations as well as countries all across the world.
Bribes are most frequently associated with large construction projects, government contracts or public tenders.
Bribery in different contexts
Bribery has long been part of doing business. It was widely considered as an acceptable business practice so much so that African countries rank among the top 10 countries in Transparency International’s corruption perception index.
Media report on corruption, bribery, graft are almost daily occurrences. These seem to outline the selfish interests of those involved as they try to satisfy their own ends rather than work for the greater good.
In Kenya, Traffic officials are always portrayed as corrupt due to the fact that they have on numerous occasions been caught taking bribes. This demonstrates the ineptitude in the police as they are clearly willing to overlook the safety of those they serve in order to fuel their own interests.
