Along with an underlying desire ‘to help’ people, I am pursuing occupational therapy as a career because it involves a perfect blend of creativity and science. As a double major in psychology and rehabilitation psychology at the University of Wisconsin Madison, I heavily studied evidence based practices and empirically supported research, especially while working in a psychosocial oncology research lab. I enjoyed learning about valid, reliable assessments and conducting formal developmental assessments in an infant classroom. Throughout my undergraduate career, I was grateful for the creative opportunities I had, such as developing novel inclusive activities and participating in the creation of individualized Applied Behavior Analysis therapy

However, it was my position as a pre-school teacher that has inspired me to pursue a career in Occupational Therapy  While working as a pre-school teacher, I found myself constantly being challenged; at the same time I was delighted that I was able to unitize my psychology background. I’ve worked with children that were having difficulty adjusting and participate in school activities, because they didn’t speak English. I’ve worked with children that have learned behaviors that needed a different approach to re-introduce them into group activities. I also had a rare opportunity to work with an Occupational therapist, together working side by side with a child that has a physical disability.…
