It seemed as if I would cause mayhem every time I moved a muscle. I never could find a way to stay idle. Fortunately, my parents found a way to channel my excess energy; they enrolled me in taekwondo classes. This was the first step into my athletic history, from that point on I continued to participate in volleyball and basketball. Although I was given the opportunity to expose myself to different sports, there was also the issue of exposing myself to different injuries. Likely enough, I suffered my first major injury in a taekwondo tournament; I broke my left ankle trying to kick my sparring opponent in the face. I couldn 't put any pressure on my foot or else I would risk further injuring it, this led me to becoming depressed and helpless. I had to resort to surgery if I wanted to walk again; my experiences during the recovery process foreshadowed my desire to become an occupational therapist. After the surgery, my doctor recommended me to an occupational therapist in jersey city. My occupational therapist was kind hearted and he made my recovery process such a breeze, and I actually looked forward to seeing him every week. He taught me how to maneuver around with crutches and a boot, and he also helped me regain the motion in my ankle needed to perform the simple task of walking. I personally love working with other people, it gives me the opportunity to create meaningful bonds that could possibly last a life-time.You have to be able to understand what a person is going through in their life, especially if he or she has suffered a major injury. Learn to be patient with a person’s recovery, it may take one person longer to recover than another person. Above all, you should respect your patient and actually be there in their time of need. Fortunately, I have all of these characteristics. Growing up with my family in the Philippines, it was etched into my mind that showing respect to everyone, especially the elderly, was the most important quality to possess. Being the oldest of two siblings, I had to be a role model for my little brother. I only became a role model to him through my demonstration of respect towards my grandparents. I have a soft spot for children and the elderly, and I want to do whatever I can to help them. Just seeing them smile genuinely makes me happy. This made it easier for me to decide on a career of occupational therapy where I can make a difference in someone’s
