Prior to this fieldwork experience I was certain I would not be able to work in a pediatric setting. This was because, I had very few experiences being around children for long periods of time and the minimum exposure I had were awkwardly silent, uncomfortable encounters for both me and the child. Therefore, when I heard about this fieldwork experience I was not looking forward to it. However, upon completing each meeting session and the observation, my perspective on being a pediatric occupational therapy have changed. During this experience, I have learned various helpful lessons and techniques to use when interacting with children, both in professional and personal setting.
During the first meeting one of the lessons I learned was to ignore unacceptable but intentional behaviors exhibited by the child in order to get their own way. Ignoring the child’s deliberate behaviors worked well during various phases of difficult times throughout the fieldwork. It was fascinating to see how the response from the adult influenced the child’s behavior.
Apart from learning how to deal with difficult behaviors, running the groups as a leader or

This mindset was both my strength and weakness during this experience. It was my weakness because it made me hesitate to try different approaches in fear of being wrong and having the student react negatively. Nonetheless, it was my strength because it made me more curious and open to know more about everything I was not aware of. Observing others then building on the techniques they used to approach the student worked well for me. Upon completion of this fieldwork experience I believe there is still a lot of room for improvement in my communication and practical skills within the pediatric

Most of the kids by the first five minutes of this observational period finished and cleaned up their table. Seeing such a drastic that seems to come from about 4 to 6 is amazing, unlike the preschoolers and toddlers the middle childhood kids have begun to take on more responsibility for their actions and are actually able to contribute to the world around them. For example, one of the kids needed a napkin, and rather than just asking a caregiver to get it, they got up and retrieved the napkin. Understandably, this is nothing special and in all honesty I may be finding such meaningless task a bit too exciting, but simply put, the change that can be noticed each age group and with such a large change from the preschoolers observed before it is just amazing to think about how much…

In addition, I knew the environment, curriculum, relationships, strategies, and the individual child has a great impact on children’s behaviors. This class also changed my thoughts because I don’t know that educators can prevent challenging behaviors when they make changes in the physical space, routines and transition, and their teaching strategies. Before taking this class, I think that challenging behavior is different reactions and actions that may have behaviors which challenge, and those reactions are socially unacceptable behavior because it challenges and become harmful to other people. However, while taking this class I usually think critically about the subject ‘behavior challenges’ because I understand that children tend to have challenging behavior when their needs unmet. I also reflect, and analyze to select appropriate strategies for each child’s…

With ever-increasing learning demands, and limited time and resources, I quickly learned that inevitably some children fail to perform adequately among their peers. This reality came quite clear to me through my experience working and substitute teaching in a public elementary school.…
