Summary: At Tequesta Trace, our Cambridge program is an international program with standards from the Cambridge University and testing programs. The students apply for entrance and have high expectations for standards and citizenship. Their curriculum includes global perspectives and service toward the community. Discussions began between Laurie Manning (literacy coach), Kim Beitz (7th grade Cambridge Civics), and Chad Melmood (7th grade Cambridge LA). At the time, Mrs. Beitz’s 7th grade Civics students were working on the unit of the Bill of Rights. The students determined that one of the best ways to focus and learn the concept of basic rights was to make books themselves which explained the Bill of Rights. By working together in pairs, they engaged in collaborative discussions to gain a better understanding of this unit of study in their Civics class. The students then used these books as study guides to help prepare for the end of unit assessment. As they worked together, they practiced many ELA standards such as those in Cluster 3: Research to Build and Present Knowledge. At the same time, these students decided to have a book drive in the language arts class. Mr. Melmood had discussed the importance of community service with the Cambridge students. They were eager to participate in this goal and the efforts to help our “sister” school, Silver Lakes Middle
