While it may be flashy to have a thousand applicants, what’s to say that all thousand applicants are even remotely qualified for the job? For example, in class we discussed the case study where a company placed a job advertisement in I believe a couple hundred newspapers and the only qualifications were “recent college graduates, good looking, and good credit score”. They got an abundance of applicants and the recruiter was thrilled. The problem with all of that is the job was for engineering and no qualifications whatsoever were listed for the job. It takes way more than a degree and good looks to be an engineer. I would bet that at of all those applicants, maybe two to three were qualified for the actual job and not the one listed. Having twenty responses from one advertisement is very successful because the recruiter more than likely put the ad in media sources related to the job. If you are looking for a computer technician, the best place to put the job advertisement would be in computer magazines and computer related blogs. If you put that ad in any newspaper with job listings, you are going to get hundreds of applications where people are not qualified. Well, if you bring in twenty candidates from one job advertisement that are more than qualified for the position, you’re going to show the company that you only find the best applicants for the company and take all precautions to weed out the junk applicants, those just applying for the sake of applying. Also, if a position opens up down the road, the company already has a list of qualified applicants they can reach out to and gage their interest. There are benefits to each result of the job advertisements and you have the find the one that fits the company the most. If you’re a larger company that has a system in place for weeding through applicants to get to the qualified ones, then maybe the larger response if right for you. If you’re on the smaller side, or you’re looking so specific candidates, than the 20 applicants if more suited for
