For over a hundred years, stereotypes of Asian Americans have dramatically changed from being viewed as uneducated poor laborers to being characterized as successful educated minority. It has changed from negativity to positivity. According to the article “Outwhiting the whites”: An examination of the persistence of Asian Americans model minority discourse, Asian Americans were stereotyped as the “Yellow Peril” before. It was a fear that Asian Americans were going to take power in America. Japanese Americans had lost a lot during World War II. They were imprisoned in internment camps, lost their homes, land, and property. After the World War II, people started to change their views on Asian Americans. American parents will believe that it is the child’s teacher or school’s fault while Asian parents believe it is because their child is not trying hard enough. Asian parents expect their children to study hard and focus on their education so that they will reach success. One reason to why Asians are “smarter” in math may be the fact that Japanese and Taiwanese students attend a longer school period and spends more time on math. Fact was shown that Asian-Americans made up twenty percent of the students enrolled at Julliard School and ten percent of Harvard’s freshman class. College is not easy for anyone. Asians don’t really go towards the law, literature and political science field because of their verbal skills. That is why tend to go towards the science and math field where verbal skills not as important. One reason to why an income for an Asian family may be higher than an American family is because they have more family members that are working who are living in the same home. Even if they receive small income individually, when everyone comes together, it is enough. Positive stereotypes seems to be harmless but it can be harmful. It is close to the Yellow Peril stereotype which is a racist fear that Asians will take power of America. I think the article ended up combating the model minority stereotype.
