Oedipus was a victim of fate but it’s clear that he wasn’t controlled by it. His fate was always to someday wed his Mother and kill his father. The oracle of Apollo at Delphi stated that this prophecy was unconditional and inevitably would occur, no matter what measures are taken to stop it coming to reality. Oedipus’s past actions were already known by fate, however, what happened in Thebes, he did out of his own will. Fate’s role has already been carried out and what this Greek tragedy highlight is that nobody i.e. Oedipus can avoid what is meant to happen. The role in Oedipus Rex is that it was established by fate itself what was to come of Oedipus, the Gods knew about the situation, however, nothing would’ve prevented the prophecy from coming
