Analysis Of Sprite's Obey Your Thirst

Sprite’s “Obey Your Thirst” advertisement centers the hand drawn faces of hip-hop legends Missy Elliot, 2Pac, and J. Cole above the tag “3 Legends; 16 Lyrics,” written in green. Beneath these legends faces are also three cans of Sprite with the musician’s lyrics written in bold letters across the cans. What interest me the most about this ad is the chosen people to represent this campaign, J Cole, Tupac, and Missy Elliot, are all leaders of the hip-hop community. The visuals are amazing and makes the art style, not the product, the focus of the ad. The green helps make this image seem peaceful and calm, which might have been a goal for Sprite to help market their products. The idea of painting an image based on a picture was also useful. At first glance the background looks plain with only the Sprite logo in the corner. After staring at it for a while it reminds me of concrete; maybe it’s a way to say that these people grew up in a concrete jungle, a harsh environment where each of they were able to rise above it all to become legends.
The ad reminded me of the when I was back home hanging out with friends and just listening to music. Not just this ad, lately Sprite has been targeting their black demographic with most of their ads being focused around one race. Talented people that have appeared in Sprite ads are Drake, LeBron, and even Vince, (Coca-Cola North America). One thing that confused me is that “why didn’t they go with Drake instead of Missy Elliot?” Then I realized that this ad was made in 2016 and if they didn’t have at least one female they might have gotten called out for being sexist or maybe it’s because she performed at the Super Bowl the year

The purpose of the ad is to appeal to the audience and it uses rhetorical appeals such as ethos, pathos and logos. It’s convincing people to give money to help this fundraising charity who uses sports to better improve the life of kids all around the world. The ad uses ethos by having credibility created by the Laureus sports for good foundation, if it was a random ad by a person it wouldn’t be credible because this person hasn’t gone out their way to help children all over the world. It uses pathos by having the children inside the sport balls as I said before. The kids look sad and in need of help, that really touches your heart because no one wants to see sad children or children struggling.…

They are often large posters or build boards that are mostly taken by an up-close shot of the celebrity in the act of drinking milk. The audience is trying to be convinced to drink more milk, and the campaign uses logical facts and statistics about milk to try and promote that idea. To appeal to a wide range of people, the paragraph in each ad is slightly different, costumed to fit the celebrity featured in that ad. This in turn, makes the ad even more appealing to the celebrity’s fans. In an ad featuring Chris Brown, he appears to be dancing in mid-air while wearing a famous “milk mustache”.…
