Romain Rolland, a brilliant French novelist stated the following: “Skepticism, riddling the faith of yesterday, prepared the way for the faith of tomorrow.” One may be doubtful with their current endeavors at first, however, being skeptical is the first step towards one’s future. I am going to take you through the journey of my current internship and enlighten you on why my skepticism turned into an implausible future career for myself. In November of 2015, I received a job at Transamerica, one of the world’s leading financial services companies, as a Market Research Intern. One may think that being a Market Research Intern is a challenging title, and by no means is it easy. A typical day for me would be to arrive at work around 1 PM, check my emails, contact my manager to see what work I need to accomplish that day, participate in conference …show more content…
I was pleased to see that Transamerica’s Market Research team works together as a family to accomplish tasks that are demanding and also help each other create a fun and safe environment. The Transamerica Market Research Team worked together to create The Drawing Board, which is a room where Transamerica employees can go to relax while working on tedious studies. Image 3 shows some of the Market Research Team as they are testing out this newly conducted room. My team cares for one another, which is satisfying. Aside from The Drawing Board, my team and I also created a Spring Fling that was held on Thursday April 21, 2016. Truth be told, I was only vaguely aware of the Noble Foundation before Jim Johnson, a Noble consultant, was seated next to me at an Oklahoma Crop Improvement Association banquet. While having small talk about summer plans, Jim got out his phone and walked me through the website to find the application. Little did I know that my summer plans would be drastically changed when I took his advice and applied for the Lloyd Noble Summer Scholar program. Being an agribusiness major from Oklahoma State University with only an agricultural regulations background, my overall exposure to the agricultural world has been through legislation, inspection, and guidelines. Needless to say, when I found out I was chosen as an intern I was excited.…

Intern Nation by author Ross Perlin analyzes the current state of internships in astoundingly immensedetail. In specific, Perlin focuses on the variety of internships, including “the good, the bad, and the ugly; the paid and the unpaid; the ostensibly academic and the completely untethered; part-time internships lasting a few weeks and full-time ones last a year” (XVI). These elements are described through first-hand accounts; for example, the interns at Disney World and the government interns on Capitol Hills. These elements are also described through in-depth investigation; for example, the 18 percent of interns who work without pay or the evidence of companies and government organizations firing full-time paid staff and replacing them with…

I, of course, had to manage them with precise dates and times in order to make sure that tasks were being completed in a timely manner. I would set aside an hour for each internship, and get my work done in that set hour. I pushed myself to complete most, if not all, of the work assigned to me. If anything else wasn't completed, I was set aside another half hour the following day to finish it up. I’m going to treat this internship just as I did with the two previous.…

I decided I wanted to be a lobbyist; someone who would lobby on behalf of farmers’ interests and the agricultural industry as a whole. I plan on majoring in Public Relations with a minor in Political Science to help prepare me for a career in lobbying.…

Narrowing Possibilities: Untested Experiences In her article, “Biographies of Hegemony”, Karen Ho explains how the vision that individuals have of investment banking and working on Wall Street is narrowing the students’ perspective of success. This tunnel-vision effect described by Karen Ho is connected to the “culture of smartness” which many students seem to believe in. In Susan Faludi’s text, “The Naked Citadel”, she also represents the idea of the a narrowing experience. Students who first hear about the field of investment banking and the so called great life on Wall Street, soon begin to believe that that is the most ideal way to live and the most financial freedom they could expect from a college degree.…

In my college career which has been around 4 years now, these first two weeks are the first of any trimester or semester that instead of being enrolled in classes, I’m enrolled in an internship. This is definitely a change from the norm but at the same time it is exciting as well. It gives me the opportunity to use or observe some of the material that I have learned so far in my classes at Johnson & Wales in a real scenario. This internship allows me as well to gain much needed additional experience in the sports and athletics industry and will give me a more holistic view of the athletic program. It will allow me to see many different roles and see from various projects what parts of athletics I like or dislike since I am overall still open for the future to a variety of roles in the sports industry…

And this was what drove me to fly 8,500 miles from the Pearl of the Orient to the Land of the Free.…
