It’s hard to believe that summer is almost over. For me, that means the end of my internship with CDN, and the start if my senior year. Back in Febuary, I was offered the oppurtunity to spend the summer with CDN, and I said yes without hesitation. As the summer came closer, I found myself wondering about what being a CDN intern would be like. I had been exposed to CDN previously but was still unsure of what this experience would be like. I quickly learned that my biggest responilibilites as an intern were in social media, prospect research, and advocacy work. Crafting tweets and Facebook posts was fun, but it also carried large importance. For many people, their only connection to others with diabetes is online, and CDN has become their support ystem. Prospect research was my first exposure to the “behind the scenes” workings of a non profit. I have grown up benefitting from the work of non profits, and I never fully appreciated it until this summer. Advocacy, unlike social media and prospect research, was my comfort zone. I have always said that I would not be the person I am without the diabetes

The work I did over the summer showed me how diabetes affects a lot of people, and it often connects people who never would have otherwise crossed paths. During the end of July and beginning of August, I took three weeks off to be a Counselor In Training at ADA Camp Carefree in New Hampshire. I wore my CDN t-shirt there, and more than one person stopped to tell me about how CDN as impacted them. Listening to their stories, along with talking to CDN members, showed me how vital CDN is, and why diabetes shouldn’t never hold you back. It made me feel like bringing diabetes to college was not as terrifying as I

Today’s goal was to introduce me to the site, the people that work in my department, the resources available to workers, and current projects. My volunteer supervisor, Geraldine Baptist, showed me around the hospital, specifically where I would normally sign in and sign out, the cafeteria, and the Occupational/Physical therapy outpatient department. Upon arrival at the OT/PT department, Ms. Baptist introduced me to the front desk secretary, Mauracell, a sweet, openhearted young lady. Mauracell warm welcoming made me extremely comfortable, and all anxiety was put to ease. Mauracell showed me around the office and work center, then introduced me to each person present and gave me a description of what types of things they work on.…

When I started working as a CAN, as well as volunteering in the health care field, I understood that the work involved included helping residents in activities of daily living. What I found out after I started working was how much of an impact the job makes on people. When I was volunteering to help a woman go grocery shopping I did not think much of it. However, when I came into her home and started putting her groceries away she started tearing up. I found out that she and her husband used to always go grocery shopping together and would later play a game that involved putting the groceries away.…

When I think about the boy who I was growing up, the young adult I am today, and the man I plan to be in the forthcoming years, one aspect of my life stands out to me far more radiantly than anything else: my culture, my skin, my identity as a Bangladeshi-American. There aren't many clubs or organization for Bangladeshi Americans such as myself. Make no mistake, there are certainly events for Bangladeshis living in the United states, many that I have attended due to various entreaties from my parents. These are event where the only language spoken is one that I barely speak (Bengali), the only music conversed about is that which I don't listen to or understand, and the only events discussed happen in another country that I have spent only a…
