Internship Experience: Eydie Strand In White Water

Great Essays
This semester, I took an unpaid internship working for Eydie Strand in Whitewater, WI. I spent most of my time assisting with Eydie’s businesses; Strand’s On the Floor and the Bluff Ridge Lighthouse. Although, I also got the privilege to work with Cozette Moffatt who owns Cabinets & Design by Cozette. Strand’s on the Floor is a flooring showroom where Eydie sells carpeting, vinyl sheet & plank, laminate flooring, porcelain wall & floor tile, ceramic wall & floor tile, hard wood, slate & stone flooring, and back splash tile. She has developed relationships with many vendors over the past 13 years she’s been in business. Eydie works with Shaw Flooring, as a main supplier of carpeting and plank flooring. M S International is a no middle-man vendor …show more content…
I’ve been shown with this experience how important it is for me to keep working at my people skill, that my ability to efficiently communicate is the bases for success with a sales job like selling flooring or lighting fixtures. This internship has helped me grow as a person and gain confidence. My favorite part of my internship was when Cozette and I were working with a client on a new construction job. The client brought in a completed floor plan, and came to select finishes and cabinetry. As we were walking through the floor plan we discussed the layouts of the bathrooms and kitchen. They were poorly laid out, without proper clearance, and the client was interested in having the space be wheel chair accessible. Cozette gave me the opportunity to draw up a new layout for the bathrooms. I got to space plan actual spaces and work with the needs of the clients including; closet space, a hidden toilet, a make-up counter, and an ironing board. I developed several layouts and spoke with Cozette about the solutions I came up with and last I heard she was going to implement one of the designs that I came up with into the client’s house. I enjoy problem solving and space planning the most out of all the aspects in this field. That is why I felt that I want to do what Cozette does for a living more than Eydie. I want to do more than help clients select finishes and do paper work all day. I want to create functional …show more content…
Being the owner of two businesses in the same location, owning the building and being involved with the community Eydie would be stressed, somedays more than others. But, as a small business owner myself I fully understood her struggle. Eydie runs her businesses efficiently for the most part although she could benefit from being more organized. She has been known to lose client paper work from time to time. Over all I’d give my internship a 8 out of 10 rating, 10 being the very best. I would have benefited from more training on the products. I asked questions when I could, but being the only person working Eydie always had paper work to do or shipments coming in she had to take care

Personal biography I was born and raised in a high crime area in The Bronx. Once I saw a man from my window robbing the apartment across from me. I was scared and did not feel safe. During that time, I grew up watching a lot of crime shows, especially Law and Order Special Victims Unit. I loved watching this show because it was entertaining, relatable to my neighborhood, and had a strong female role.…

law firm internship. An agonizing few days passed as I waited for a reply, and I was ecstatic to learn that I had been chosen for the internship. No words could explain how excited I was but the smile that filled my face said it all. At this internship, I built upon what I learned at Hyde Square Task Force and developed more confidence and determination to succeed in a professional environment. Not only did I take Shakespeare, writing, public speaking, civil rights and art classes, but I also worked in an office, participated in community service events, and visited colleges, which all helped me explore and adapt to different ambiances of the work…

During my internship experience, I learned a lot of things that I thought I knew but are misconstrued on. With that being said, I know everything must be done in decent order or this will cause chaos and lead to confusion. I also learned everything takes patience and is very time- consuming. I became frustrated, so many times and just wanted to give up, but I had to remind myself that hard times are going to come and everything is going to work out. Many times I sat on my bed crying because it seems like everything piled on me at one time.…

An internship is normally a work task a student completes after a series of classes to gain a degree in a particular field they think they’ll love, whether they still love it after they’ve completed that journey is based upon a multitude of criteria. Luckily, I have found that I quite enjoy fashion and working in retail throughout this internship at Dress Barn. Occasionally students find that what they thought they were getting into, is actually completely different than what they expected. Especially when reading about a profession on paper versus seeing it up closer in real life. When I started college, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to study or achieve with my life.…

I also assisted with child abuse and neglect investigations (CAN), intake, individualized service plans (ISPs), comprehensive family assessments (CFAs), entered data into Family, Adult, and Child Tracking System (FACTS), and continued to monitor the families I serve through home visitations. My favorite part of the internship experience outside of increasing the morale around the office, has been to work with families through the ISP process. This process is put in place in efforts to reunify the family. It gives me great joy to watch the family work on a plan to help them gain custody of their children.…

So far, my SCE has consisted of organizing and preparing for the start-up of this year’s National Art Honor Society chapter. In addition to inviting members to join and having our first meeting, I have been setting up for the upcoming induction as well as composing our bylaws to the NAHS constitution. As of now, I have not been able to work on my deliverable, as that project will come into play when the activities and events of NAHS begin for the school year. When those events begin in November, I will be able to construct the deliverable for my SCE.…

For Field Work Term this year, I went to New York City to work for I’m From Driftwood, a nonprofit LGBTQ storytelling archive. Primarily, I chose this internship because of the Huffington Post articles that I would be responsible for, which I did find worthwhile. I knew ahead of time that I’m From Driftwood was a small operation: consisting of its founder and board members that would scramble to find new opportunities and contacts to use for their events. There was no office space for the company, so most people worked from home or various other spaces around the city. So for the most part the internship consisted of me living alone in an apartment, while waiting for an assignment each day to do for my supervisor, the founder of the company.…

In my opinion, it is a memorable experience for me to complete my internship placement at the Melbourne Planetarium and it is also one of the correct decisions I have made to enhance my skills and employability. Unlike academic learning at the university, internship is a brand new experience, and there are also similarities observed between the academic studying and working as a professional – they both are requiring problem-solving and constantly learning. As I was working with my supervisors Dr. Tanya Hill and Dr. Kate Phillips, I have learned and developed valuable soft skills such as communication and organization skills. It also put my knowledges and skills learned at university to test at workplace, both computing skill and analyzing…

During the first seven weeks of the internship, there have been many valuable skills learned. There are 3 large and valuable skills that have been learned during this time. The first skill learned is how to take an assessment and create an individualized and comprehensive treatment plan. I have had experience creating comprehensive and individualized treatment plans while in classes but has been a valuable skill to learn to do this based off of a real patient assessment. The second skill learned during the first 7 weeks has been to notice when a treatment plan needs to be adjusted and how to make these adjustments.…

The importance of an internship experience cannot be overstated. Today, employers favor prospective employees who have done not only one internship but multiple internships. A college education will serve to propel a graduate into a profession by conferring a degree, which demonstrates an academic proficiency in various theoretical and practical examples of ways that a job might be performed. An internship makes the classroom’s abstract theories and learned examples concrete by placing the student in a real life work situation with real live co-workers performing actual professional tasks, which the job encompasses. Therefore, the payoff of an unpaid internship is that you will gain invaluable professional experience, where you might…
