Wartime Issues Loung Ung, she is a Cambodian born motivational speaker, lecturer and a human rights activist. In 1975, her family and herself was captured into a meager village in Cambodia and was compelled to work for the Khmer Rouge. The five years she was captured, she wasn’t given the right education, was malnourished, and they scarcely had any free time. Due to her wartime experiences, as a young child, Ung’s adolescence was lost and demolished by the Angkar in various ways and because of it impacted her adult life. Since she was being controlled by the Angkar, they deprived her of not getting the right education she needs. Education wasn’t needed in the village, they wanted the children to have sharp minds and education wasn’t going to help that. “Children in our society will not attend school just to have their brains cluttered with useless information. They will have sharp minds and fast bodies if we give them hard work. The Angkar cannot tolerate laziness”(Ung 318). When she escaped Cambodia to live in America, at the age of ten, with no educational knowledge, it must have been tough for her to comprehend a new language and to keep up with a fourth grade level schooling she was learning. …show more content…
As a young child it is crucial for them to get the right nourishment. “My stomach growls loudly as I step up to the table. I cannot see into the pot and my mouth salivates at the smell of the rice and fish....and walk away, praying that I won’t fall and spill my food”(Ung 320). This demonstrates the hunger she had all the time was consistent. Now as an adult to break child hunger she has worked for many programs to help kids and families get enough food to eat
