What if you were forced out by rebels and had to leave your own family behind? A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park, is a realistic fiction novel. This story is a dual narrative. In the first storyline, Nya is a eleven year old girl, who is in the Nuer tribe, she lives in South Sudan. She must fetch water two times every day. In the second storyline, Salva, who is also an eleven year old boy, part of the Dinka tribe, and lives in South Sudan. Salva is forced to leave South Sudan, because of civil war. Both characters struggle to survive. Linda Sue Park wants readers to know that they should never give up.

In Salvas storyline he has to run for his life when the rebels attack. During his escape, he faces being alone, being abandoned by his group. He doesn't give up because he thinks that his family would want him to not give up. He finds a group to travel with. He has to deal with dehydration and starvation. He finds a friend, Mariel, however, Marial is eaten by a lion. Salva finds his uncle, however, uncle is murdered by the Nuer tribe. With all these challenges, Salva pushed himself to the limits, and didn't give up. Salva asks himself, ¨How can I go on without them?¨ thinking about his family(pg.72). With all these challenges, Salva could of gave up, but he did not. Because finding his family is so important, Salva then asks himself, ¨But how can I not go on¨(pg.72). He never loses hope, because he wants to reunite with his family. However, Salva faces more danger. He has to live in three different refugee camps. The conditions in the refugee camp were horrible, they were cramped, there was not much food and water, and it was dangerous. In the ifo refugee camp, the Ethiopian Army is shooting at them into the Gilo River. Even with all these obstacles, Salva never gave up. At the end of the storyline, Salva receives news that he is chosen to go to Rochester, New York to get adopted. Salva's persistence pays off when he finds out most of his family is still alive.
