Even after he lost track of his family he stayed strong, for example, a quote from the text states, ‘Then he caught up with the group, determined not to lag behind, not to complain, not to be trouble to anyone.’ (22). Which shows that no matter what, he would stay strong. Salva also persevered when he first heard the gunshots, he ran and didn’t stop running, ‘He ran until he could not run anymore. Then he walked. For hours, until the sun was nearly gone from the sky.’(9). Again, Salva didn’t stop until he felt it safe to stop. Which shows perseverance, of safety. He also showed perseverance when he said, ‘“I will get us safely to Kenya, he thought. No matter how hard it is.”’ (81). Which shows his determination to get all the boys and himself to the next refugee camp, to safety. No matter what happened to him, Salva was always determined to get to the refugee camp safely and alive.

In conclusion, Salva, as an individual, survived many challenges in his journey. He survived with perseverance, determination and knowledge to survive. Salva was very fortunate to have these skills, because if he wasn’t determined, he would have never made it. But Salva survived the very long
