People often retreat in the face of adversity. The problem with this is that adversity creates some of the biggest character building events you’ll ever face. The best way to build good character through adversity is by facing the challenge and not backing down. The way you face the adversity presented to you will change the way you think in the future just like how mistakes are the best teachers. All the points covered express how willing and ready Santiago to commit to returning himself to a state where he could begin preparing for his inevitable exit from Tangiers and continue to persevere on his quest. Santiago has demonstrated many times throughout the story how perseverance in the face of adversity is key to becoming a better person. The thief is one of the best things that happens to Santiago allowing for him to face adversity work to overcome it with the crystal merchant and reap the benefits of this in the form of gold earned experience gain and skills learned.
