Live Observation Coding- January 25, 2018 The class we observed was Mr. Morris’s third grade class at Sunset Hill. The class was fairly small with a total of eighteen students. The PE class ran a total time of forty-five minutes. When the children walked in the room, I could already tell that Mr. Morris had an entry routine with specific expectation of class. I could tell that the kids’ attention was on us as guests and Mr. Morris addressed it at the beginning; however, after a while the kids began to disregard us. The class was learning a new game, Storm the Castle, and the instructor did an efficient way of explaining the game. He gave demonstrations of what the game entailed and ways of not doing things. The author Charles Baxter read from his books, one about a teacher and another about someone who was in an accident. In the one first one he talked about a teacher who was telling nonsense to her fourth grade class. This teacher talked and talked, knowing that her students were listening attentively trying to absorb as much as they can from her rant. The kids were more interested in what she was saying than moving on to arithmetic. It showed how kids are very gullible.…

Seventh grade, my second year now at what I thought to be the worst school in the world. On back to school night I met a man who would change my perspective on life completely, that man being Brandon Lilly. Henry Adams once said “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” At a mere five-foot four he appeared to be a kid minus the burly lumberjack beard that he possessed. I remember being skeptical at first because I had never had a male teacher before.…

Many believe that the way to help girls become more interested in math and science is to “pinkify” them. They believe that girls are interested in fashion and boys and make-up and that is what program should relate math and science with, in order for girls to become interested in the topics. But what these people fail to take in account is that not all girls are interested in make-up or dating or even fashion. Girls have different interests and programs should take that into account when trying to help girls become more interested in math and science. Also, parents should encourage their children to take interest in the subjects.…

Roald Dahl’s Likes and Dislikes As a young boy, Roald Dahl loved to eat candy. When he was nine years old, he and his four friends would walk from school together, straight to the sweet-shop. Every day they would come in and buy as much candy as they had money to spend, even though the owner, Mrs Pratchett, had a vile attitude and grimy hands that grabbed the candy out of the jars. They didn’t even mind that one of the kids heard from his dad that the licorice Bootlaces were made from squashed mouse parts. Roald also found it very fun to think up evil schemes.…

One thing that stuck out to me in chapter four was the section on “I-Messages”. Especially in Elementary classrooms, I think that it is easy for a teacher to point fingers at students when they are misbehaving. It is easy for a teacher to call out that student and tell them that they are doing something wrong. But when a teacher uses an “I-Message”, they are showing the student how their actions are effecting others without criticizing the student. When teachers use “I-Messages” students don’t feel attacked by the teacher and they are more likely to be open to changing their behavior because they see how they are effecting others.…

In developing my lesson, I was hyper-aware of the consequence of assuming what students may and may not know. I graduated and do a lot of my work in Fairfax County Schools; however, Prince William County schools and Osbourn Park High School run their English education quite differently. I think this explains my concern over checking with Mrs. Hakes what students may or may not have been exposed to in previous years. In her notes, Mrs. Hakes later remarks how well my lesson was planned, with deep consideration of the observed methods and classroom processes (A. Hakes, personal communication, March 28 2017). This statement expresses my effort to be not only thorough but also focused and concerned with students’ prior knowledge during the developmental…

Flinn has some pretty incredible things happening in her classroom, and I’m so grateful that I was able to witness them firsthand. This assignment has definitely influenced what I will do (and not do) in my very own classroom someday. To begin, I want my students to play an active role in their entire educational experience.
