An Unwanted Trip On Italy Essay
My family loves to travel, and we’ve been fortunate enough to do so quite a bit. During the summer of 2011, we took a trip to Europe, and a few stops in Italy were included on that trip. There were several places in Italy that we didn’t get to see. I hoped to one day return so that I could visit some of the key places we missed. Less than three years later, on April 20, 2014, we took an unexpected, last minute trip back to Italy. However, this was not the trip I had in mind.
April 20, 2011, was my grandfather’s birthday and also happened to be Easter Sunday. Somewhere around 8:00 that morning my dad’s phone rang. He didn’t recognize the number, so he didn’t answer it. My mom’s phone then rang shortly afterwards, and she decided to answer it, guessing that it might be my grandparents calling to wish us a “Happy Easter”. You see, to celebrate Granddad’s birthday, he and my grandmother (who I call Mims) were out of the country, cruising the Adriatic Sea.
It turned out that Mom was half right. When she answered, it was my grandfather on the other end of the phone. However, she could immediately hear in his voice that something was wrong. Granddad explained that something was wrong with Mims and that the ship doctor had her transported to the nearest hospital, which was in Ravenna, Italy. Granddad shared that the prognosis wasn’t good, and the doctors weren’t sure she’d survive the next twenty-four hours.
Dad, Mom and I immediately began scrambling…
