Is it Necessary? Amy Foster is a 17 year old girl from Houston Texas. She has it all a great loving family wealth and a very bright future ahead of her. But, Amy lacks something very important, Amy lacks self- confidence. Kyle Amy’s boyfriend has slowly convinced her that her appearance is not good enough, he constantly likes to remind her that she would look better if she lost a couple of inches around her waist, or getting her ears pulled back a bit would suit her much better. He even suggests that a nose job would do her good. Giving Amy’s young age of 17 what would you think if I told you that she has seriously considered some of these changes too her appearance? Amy has even convinced her mom to take her with the local plastic surgeon? …show more content…
“No surgical procedure is risk free.” (Zuckerman) Many teens don’t consider or think about all the possible health risks that can accompany plastic surgery. With this in mind would plastic surgery really be worth catching a horrible infection? Or even worth dying over? “The most common procedures among teens are rhinoplasty, breast augmentation, male breast reduction, ear surgery and dermabrasion.”(Olya) Such as breast implants alone can cause at least one serious complication within the first three years. Including infection, hematomas or seroma, capsular contractive, loss of nipple sensation, and hypertrophic scarring. This is one too many risks a teen girl should take at a young age. “Teens as young as 13 are going under the surgeon’s knife for liposuction.” (Duck & Betts) Like breast implants Liposuction carries potentially serious risks. Primary risks are infection, damage to the skin, nerve or vital organs, fat or blood loss that can even lead to death. Not only does liposuction carry serious it also requires a long and painful recovery that many teens would not know how to properly …show more content…
“Doctors don’t want to alter body parts until they are fully developed, and different areas reach maturity at different ages.”(Jacobs) Most body parts are not fully developed during teen years. Operating on body parts that are not fully developed can cause health issues later on in life. “I want my patients to have the maturity to handle surgery and recovery and to have realistic expectations.”(Giat) Mental maturity plays a big part in any surgical procedure. Without the adequate maturity post-surgery expectations can be very different than what’s expected. “The plastic surgery aspect involves much more than just the physical changes. Patient needs to be able to process emotional effects after surgery.”(Kabaker) After surgery, many people have trouble with adjusting to life in their new body.
