Listening and Note-Taking Listening and Note-Taking is essential in order to be successful in all aspects of college. When an individual listens and takes quality notes they retain the information being presented a lot better than if the person did not take notes or listen to what was being lectured. When a student pays attention to detail in a lecture and records quality, organized, and precise notes the student has a better understanding of the subject being taught. There are a few different strategies to use for taking notes for example: The Outlining Method, The Cornell Method, The Sentence Method, The Charting Method, and the Mapping Method. The way to properly use this method to draw a two and a half inch margin on the left side of the paper, then leave a six-inch area to take down information. unlike the other systems, there are only advantages to this style of note taking. Some of the clear advantages are organized and systematic notes, it is simple and efficient, and this system saves time in the note taking process. This style of note taking is the most efficient overall in most situations. The third style of note taking is the Sentence Method. This method is used for lectures that are heavy and somewhat organized. The way an individual uses this method is to with every new thought, fact or idea record them on a different line and number the line. There are some advantages and disadvantages to using this system. Some of the clear advantages are this system is more organized compared to writing a paragraph, also thinking to track content is still limited, and however; still obtains more or all of the information presented in the lecture. The disadvantages are the inability to determine either major or minor points of the lecture, very difficult to edit without a complete rewrite, and also very difficult to review unless …show more content…
This method is used primarily if the lecture is heavy and is also well organized. The Mapping Method is a graphic representation of the lecture.This method of note taking can maximize active participation in the lecture. Like most note taking systems, there are advantages and disadvantages. A few of the advantages are the allowance to visually track a lecture regardless of the situation or condition. The disadvantages are that the student may not be able to hear the changes in major points into facts. These are the five note taking systems that are commonly used today, According to Rasmussen College there are three different steps to writing better notes. The first step is to observe and adapt to what direction the lecture goes. The second is to record and make brief notes on a different page for each new lecture. The third and final note-taking tip from Rasmussen College is to review, always make sure to review the notes within the twenty-four-hour window and edit words and phrases that are illegible in a different color pen. By doing these things, you will become a better note taker. These are just some of the keys to being a better note-taker according to Rasmussen
