Chapter 6: Strategies To Implement Into Our Classrooms

The reading for this week provided us with great strategies to implement into our classrooms that are research based to help our students be successful academically. These four key tools to success are notetaking, summarizing, homework, and practicing. In Ceri Dean’s chapter 6, he discusses that teachers should teach these at the beginning of each school year to give students concrete ways for student success (Dean,2012, pp.80-98). I found several “golden nuggets” in this reading that I will implement in the new school year. I have never thought about teaching how to take notes to my 11th graders and 12th graders. I have always assumed that they learned this skill in middle school. Reflecting on this past school year, I see a clear need for me to teach various ways to take notes. By …show more content…
A second “golden nugget” that I stumbled upon and did not think about until I read Chapter 6, was teaching students how to summarize scientific passages. I teach my students about graphs for the ACT but not about summarizing. I can see how teaching summarization of science passages can help my students raise their science composite score on the ACT. Homework was also mentioned in the reading and is a very controversial topic in education today. The three recommendations in Dean’s book for assigning homework to improve achievement are develop school or district policies, give homework to support the lesson, and give feedback on homework (Dean, 2012, p.103). The one thing I found interesting that there are pros and cons to giving homework. I give homework but limit the number of calculation problems to five or less and it should not take more than thirty minutes to
