    Listening and Note-Taking Listening and Note-Taking is essential in order to be successful in all aspects of college. When an individual listens and takes quality notes they retain the information being presented a lot better than if the person did not take notes or listen to what was being lectured. When a student pays attention to detail in a lecture and records quality, organized, and precise notes the student has a better understanding of the subject being taught. There are a few different strategies to use for taking notes for example: The Outlining Method, The Cornell Method, The Sentence Method, The Charting Method, and the Mapping Method. Note-Taking and listening are the single most important thing a student can do while in a college class. Using these strategies will help the individual take better notes and be a more successful student. The first method is the outlining method, this is usually the more useful, except when used for Math and Physics. This format puts the most general information to the left side of the paper and the more specific information to the right side. There are no numbers or letters used in this type of format. This system has some advantages and some disadvantages just like every other note taking method. Some of the advantages are the reduction in editing time and the system is well organized if done properly.
