Academic Misconduct Copying, peeking through your friend’s answers during the test, reusing your own work, and finishing off homework for your young siblings, these actions are considered reprehensible and should not be performed elsewhere. In general, many people have committed those actions before. Most of us do agree that the actions as aforementioned may degrade the academic community. However, those actions may not be equally harmful to the academic community.

Despite that, when it comes to matters of plagiarism, there is another type of plagiarism as well, and it simply known as self-plagiarism; most people often conclude that it is not harmful to the academic community, whereas just to the person who does the action. However, in my opinion, it may degrade the academic community just like common plagiarism. Fundamentally, self-plagiarism is when you use your previous works without using a citation. In general, it might not be as harmful as plagiarism, but it does leave negative impact to the students and the academic community. For instance, it can make students become lazy, as they can submit their previous works. Also, it reduces their creativity and negatively affects how they utilize their knowledge, which may lead to difficulties in finding their future careers. Nonetheless, when someone plagiarizes, he/she may ruin the expectation of the readers or the professors. For example, the readers would expect to read something new and interesting, and the professor would expect the writer to generate new ideas, and the article should be all-new content, or clearly stated, whereas the readers ended up reading the old article they might already know or have read before. Consequently, the respect and trust given by the audients and the readers would be weakened or completely wiped out. Henceforth, it may ruin the academic community’s reputation, as other people would see the academic community as no longer trustworthy by the actions its students perform. In Knowing Language by Robin Scarcella, there is a statement where Socrates says, “Regard your good name as the richest jewel you can possibly be possessed of . . . The way to a good reputation is to endeavor to be what you desire to appear” (96). You will be what you choose to be.
