There are many things in life that are thought to be good for some people, but bad for others. This is commonly known as the dissoi logoi, which is intended to help an individual gain a deeper understanding of an issue by forcing the person to consider it from the angle of their opponent. A great example that represents the dissoi logoi is abortion. Abortion is the ending of pregnancy by removing a fetus or embryo from the womb before it can survive on its own. This procedure can happen through medication or the fetus can be surgically removed. The relation between abortion and dissoi logoi is how some people see abortion as a form of “murder” while others believe it is saving someone else’s life at the same time. One side of the argument shows in favor of the female who decides to get the abortion. Her reasoning could vary and include many different things, such as: she is too young to raise a child, does not have a stable home or environment to support the child, or it could be that she was raped. Once the egg becomes fertilized, the fetus then has a heartbeat and doing something to end that heartbeat is essentially ending the child’s life. Although having an abortion is not illegal, many people still consider it to be murder. The argument that the pro-life supporters make is that the child has a right to live. In a sense it’s not the child’s fault that they were created, so that child shouldn’t have to suffer the consequences. Some people also believe it is harmful to the child to do the surgical procedure because the child is physically suctioned out of the mothers body. This technique, of course, is more horrifying to think about and mainly the reason people believe abortion to be an act of
