The first example of the theme is when Matt was at school one day and he was going to the bathroom when he ran into a unknow man dressed in a UPS uniform. The man started talking to Matt and told him he was him dad that he had never met before and that the Sholter’s dog “Pookie” was injured. Matt decided to follow him but “Denny” was really trying to kidnap Matt so he could get more money from his sister because if she saw that he had a child she would want to give Denney money so he could afford to live with Matt (156). Denny was threatening when he made Bonnie go to the edge of the boat so he could shoot her and the she would fall into the frigid cold water. But since Bonnie knew what she was doing and was aware of her surroundings she could yell out “zinger” so Matt could tell what to do when Denny was pointing the gun towards his sister (202-203). Matt heard Bonnie and he knew to throw his baseball right at Denny the faster he could so he could distract him and so Bonnie could climb back over from the edge and call for help. After, this showed showed how Bonnie used good strategy and was knew her surroundings which ended up with Bonnie and Matt getting help and ending up back home safely. In Conclusion, these examples from my book show that the theme is to be aware of your surroundings and to not talk to strangers because it can lead you into adversity and/or
