Literary Analysis - The House of the Scorpion Matt is a clone, property of Alacrán Estates a refugee in Atzland, and a drug lord of opium. In The House of the Scorpion Matt, a clone lives life at the fullest with Celia and the person He was cloned from, El patrón. At the age of 7 Matt get’s a bodyguard Tam Lin. Tam Lin takes care of Matt and El patrón. One day Matt is needed for spare parts. Matt escapes to Atzland where He meets Doña Esperanza and takes over opium. The setting plays a big part in the story, so does characterization, and finally the plot of the book.

It sets the mood, conflict, and the main character Matt certainly goes through different stages through the book as the main character. As the book went on the author revealed more and more of the characters.During the book Matt goes through ages 1-14 as a clone and El patrón shows affection when Matt was growing up until 14. Whenever most people besides the Eejits see Matt they always say an insult that has to do with a clone. ( Farmer. Chapters 1-23) The way people see clones is a bad view and hurts Matt. When Matt is in the Plankton factory in santa clara where he was found out that he was a clone when one kid beat up a keeper. Then the keepers throw him into the bone pit. After that Matt meets Doña Esperanza and expresses her thoughts to Matt about Opium. ( Farmer. Chapters 32-36) The keepers obviously hate Matt because on his leg it writes property of Alacran estates and that is why Matt was thrown in the bone …show more content…

I think in book two The Lord of Opium these three elements will be present and will be more detailed than this book. Whenever you read a book think about how everything clicks into place like gears in a car or machine and think what happens if the author changes something in the book. Also as you read the book look at the pages, the words may reveal the setting how the author used characterization and predict how the plot will
