The novel To Kill A Mockingbird was written by Harper Lee. It takes place in the small town of Maycomb, Alabama. It is told by a girl named Jean-Louise Finch, or otherwise known as Scout. This book took place around the time of the Great Depression and tells the story of Scout’s point of view of the world around her.It all started with a strange neighbor who lives right in front of her. This is a significant part of the theme because most of the time conflicts are the reason why people are living in fear. For example, when Tom Robinson was talking in court. Tom Robinson is a African-American who just got accused for raping a girl. In this scene, Tom was testifying and the judge was asking him questions.The judge asks why he ran and everybody knows that when you run from a crime scene that means you are afraid of getting caught. But that is not true for Tom Robinson’s case.In this case,the judge and Tom says “‘were you so scared that she’d hurt you,you…’‘no suh,scared’’’(p 196). He was afraid of having to confess to something that he didn’t do and back in the days nobody trust anyone that is a different race from them. When Scout realized how Boo was not just a neighbor nut also her friend she says this “Boo was our neighbor.He gave us...our lives.But neighbors give in return. We never put back into the tree...we had given him nothing and it made me sad”(p 278). At first, they don’t comprehend Boo so they became frightened of him but now he just saved their lives and they now understand that he was just being a neighbor to them.
