Leaky Gut Syndrome was a diagnosis that was formerly reserved for Naturopathic Doctors. It is a disorder that was basically unknown, but has garnered a lot of attention from the medical community recently. There have been many studies that link this disorder to such things as gluten intolerance and other digestive issues. Many of these are also classified as Autoimmune diseases and it is in understanding the connection between the two that the medical community can begin to look for treatments to improve or cure these diseases. This paper will explore what Leaky Gut Syndrome is and what causes the breakdown of the digestive tract. In doing so it will show that there is indeed a link between Leaky Gut Syndrome and some of these Autoimmune diseases.
In order to understand what Leaky Gut Syndrome is, it is important to first understand the function of the Gastrointestinal (GI) tract, particularly the small intestine. The small intestine is the longest part of the digestive system , measuring approximately 22 feet long in the average adult and is where 90% of digestion and absorption take place (Mandal). It is in this part of the intestines that carrier proteins bind to some of the nutrients and they are absorbed through the wall and into the blood stream. A healthy GI tract only allows small molecules through because the cells that make up the lining of the intestines are tightly packed together. The GI tract is home to its own ecosystem of bacteria.
