Emotional Functioning As someone who was diagnosed with PTSD three years ago, and has experienced symptoms for the past five years, I have experienced various deficits in emotional functioning. Reflecting back, my emotional functioning has varied over time. For instance, before I started treatment, my emotional functioning was quite poor. I was unable to regulate emotion and was constantly in a flight or flight mode. For example, in high school and my first year of college, I could not even walk home without feeling incredibly paranoid that someone was following me. Her seizures originate in her left temporal lobe. Almost every day, she experiences impairments in her language functioning. Most of the time when we talk, my mom will have difficulty finding words to use. Over the weekend, my dad hosted a party at our house. My mom becomes so self-conscious and anxious when talking with other people because of this language impairment. At this party, my mom felt compelled to talk to our guests because we were hosting it at our house. However, she would not let me leave her side and relied on me to do the majority of the talking. Every party we are at and every situation that involves talking with other people she wants me to talk for her. Her epilepsy greatly impairs her life, especially her language functioning. People with epilepsy often experience impairments in their language functioning. One interesting thing I have learned recently is that epilepsy patients, particularly those who have left temporal functioning, find it difficult to come up with words. Seizures in the temporal lobe impacts the hippocampus. While the hippocampus is used for memory, it also impacts language processing as well. If my mom 's temporal lobe and hippocampus were functioning normally, she would not be experiencing a continuous problem in coming up with
