I have been volunteering with the North Delta Community Police for almost two years now, and throughout my time here we try to make meaningful bonds with the residents of the community through the events that we participate in. One of our activities is participate in is making weekly visits to the local senior’s home and interact with them through many recreational activities. Through this experience, I have been able to get to know one of my uncles friend, Phudupatab. I have known Phudupatab for many years and have come to understand that he had his struggles with an addiction to alcohol. I set up a sit down interview interaction with him, outside my volunteer responsibilities, to understand his past substance abuse issues. The initial interview he seemed to be unwilling to talk about his alcoholism. I then asked my uncle to tell me more about him so I could conduct the interview better in my second attempt, even though at some points he had “I don’t remember” as an answer. However, I have known him well enough to infer these characteristics based on previous interactions and the environment of the of the senior’s home. Mental disorders due to psychoactive substance use is “a diagnosis of… [a] mental disorder indicat[ing] that the cause is the use of a psychoactive substance, which may or may not have been medically prescribed” according to the biological viewpoint (Goldner, Jenkins, Palma, & Bilsker, p. 64).
