Everyone knows it is important to have a healthy and balanced diet, yet not many people actually have one. The way someone eats could affect their body or even their quality of life tremendously. There is a saying, “You are what you eat,” and while it is not meant to be taken literally, the saying does have some truth to it. There are endless reasons of why individuals or even whole groups have an unhealthy diet. Contributing factors could be something as basic as a fast food or candy advertisement, which would most likely affect an individual, or something much more broad such as one’s culture or even a psychological aspect. A healthy and balanced diet is extremely vital to one’s health and their quality of life.

Individuals want to eat foods that not only taste great, but foods that can make them feel great too. For example, many people love to eat chocolate. Generally, chocolate can increase pleasant feelings and it can also reduce tension. Chocolate contains a number of chemicals that stimulate the brain the same way cannabis does. This can lead to cravings or even addiction (Hopf). Eating too many foods such as chocolates and fast foods has lead to an increase in obesity. This ties into accessibility. Specifically, in the United States, there are fast food restaurants on almost every corner. If something is easily accessible and someone is surrounded by it no matter where they go, it would be hard to fight the temptation. Fast food usually has a good taste and it isn’t too expensive which can lure people to it. Many Americans work long hours from sun up until sundown.
