It’s not hard for an individual to go out for dinner with friend and not take into consideration any health choices they’re about to make. Although some fat in a diet is essential for good health, “foods made with solid fats provide abundant energy, but few if any essential nutrients, they contribute to weight gain and make it difficult to meet nutrient needs” (Whitney & Rolfes, 2013, p. 147). As a nutrition expert at the table, I will need to make several recommendations about how the meal just served to my overweight friend could be altered to lower both fat and calories.

My friend has come to me for advice on his food choices and to figure out ways to begin to lose weight. Luckily, there are a number of things my friend could do to help

The first mistake my friend made was ordering a side of ribs, which normally includes barbeque sauce. A 1/4th rack of ribs fully cooked in barbecue sauce contains 280 kcal, 15 grams of fat, and 5 grams of saturated fat. I would recommend that he have a 1/4th rack of ribs with bone without sauce or seasoning, which contains about 131 calories, 3 grams of fat and 0 grams of saturated fat. Hence, by doing this, he will eliminate 149 kcal, 12 grams of fat, and 5 grams of saturated fat. The second mistake my friend made was to get a baked potato with sour cream and butter. A baked potato with 1 tbs butter and 1 tbs sour cream has about 350 kcal, 14 grams of fat, and 10 grams of saturated fat. I would recommend that my friend eat a plain potato instead, which only has 200 kcal, less than 1 gram of fat, and 0 grams of saturated fat. Therefore, by eliminating the sour cream and butter on the baked potato, it helps cut down on 150 kcal, 13 grams of fat, and 10 grams of saturated fat. Following dinner, he selects to have the chocolate mousse with coffee and cream. A cup of chocolate mousse contains about 355 calories, 25.69 grams of fat and 17.749 grams of saturated fat, and 10 fluid ounces of coffee and cream contain 60 calories, 6 grams of fat, and 4 grams of saturated fat.
