For this experiential exercise the Least Preferred Co-Worker Scale, developed by Fred Fiedler in 1978, was used to determine my own leadership style. This test is completed by thinking of a person that I have worked least well with to complete a task. The test is set up as a questionnaire and involves 18 different bipolar adjectives that would be used to describe the person that I have had the most difficulty working with on a task. In completing the questionnaire, it was determined that my leadership style is task-oriented. This was determined by the score of 54, which places me within the range of a task- oriented leadership style. I thought I had more of a relationship-oriented leadership style based on the fact that I am generally more …show more content…
All of the members of the group had good rapport and had a high level of cohesion. Thus we were able to share our ideas openly with their strengths and weaknesses. The task structure was set up in a way to get the tasks completed efficiently with the time given to complete the project. My position of power was weak, as I am considered the “go-to” person and not a member of management; however our group was able to work together as equals to provide our collective knowledge and ideas to complete the project with our best solutions. Fiedler’s theory does explain my relationship to the above group, which I utilized as an example of my last act as a leader. As is covered in the text on page 302, Fiedler’s contingency theory is based on the assumption that both the leaders motivational style and capacity to control the group situation. Although, my position of power was not strong the other two situational factors are on point with the theory that I had favorable situational control and my task-motivated leadership was within the most effective range.
