Collaborative and interprofessional practice (IPP) occurs when multiple healthcare workers from different professional backgrounds work together with patients, families and communities to deliver the highest quality of care (World Health Organization, 2010). It is evident that IPP is regarded as an important aspect of healthcare delivery on a global scale as the World Health Organization (WHO) has released a position statement on interprofessional collaboration (IPC) and interprofessional education (IPE), and suggested models for its implementation. The WHO Framework for Action on Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice highlights the current status of IPC and IPE around the world, and identifies mechanisms to build successful collaborative teams. The stated goal is to provide strategies for health policymakers to implement the elements of IPC and IPE that will be most beneficial within their health system (Gilbert, 2010; WHO, 2010). The terms interprofessional, interdisciplinary and collaborative care have become buzzwords in the healthcare sphere. Their promotion has expanded exponentially, especially in the education of health professionals, and has accrued significant government funding for their growth and development. Unquestionably, complete holistic patient care is beyond the proficiencies and scope of practice of one profession.
