General environment - the layer of external environment that affects the organization indirectly: technology, enonomy, socioculture, legal/policital, and international

Task environment - the layer of external environment that directly influences the organizations operations and performance: customers, competitors, suppliers, and labor market

Environmental uncertainty - two basic factors that influence are: The number of factors that affect the organization, and The extend to which those factors change

*Adapting to the environment:
Boundary-Spanning -roles assumed by people or departments to link and coordinate the organization with key elements in the external environment.
Inter-organizational partnerships - adapt to the environment by reducing boundaries and collaboration with other organizations.
Mergers and Joint Ventures - Merger is combining of two or more organizations into one. Joint venture is strategic alliance or program by two or more organizations.
corporate culture
set of key values, beliefs, understandings, and norms that members of an organization share.

Visible items - manner of dress, behavior physical symbols, ceremonies, office layout

Invisible items - deeper values and shared understandings. These are interpreted through stories, language, and symbols

Subconscious items - basic underlying assumptions and beleiefs that subconsciously guide behavior and decisions.
elements of understanding corporate culture
symbols - object, act, or events that conveys meaning to others. Convey organizations important values

story - narrative based on a true event tat is repeated and shared among employees. Stories told to new employees to keep values alive

hero - a figure who exemplifies the deeds, character, and attributes of a strong culture. Role model for employees

slogan - phrase or sentence that succinctly expressed key values.

ceremony - planned activity that makes up a special event and is conducted for the benefit of the audience.
environment and culture
Adaptive cultures - manager pay close attention to their constituencies, and customers and initiate change when needed to serve their legitimate interests, even if risky.
Adaptive culture expressed that managers care deeply about customers, employees, and people. they value useful change.

Unadaptive culture - managers behave insularly, politically, etc. This expresses that managers care about themselves and their immediate work. risk reduction over leadership initiatives.
