Describe how the heart functions

The heart's only function is to pump blood and circulate it throughout the body

- Arteries: any of a series of blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to all parts of the body

- Aorta: large artery that carries blood from the heart to the body

- Capillaries: extremely small blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood to the tissue

- Coronary arteries: 2 arteries arising from the aorta that supply blood to the heart muscle

- Veins: blood vessels that carry blood from tissue to heart

Define cardiovascular disease, infarction, coronary heart disease, stroke, and heart attack

1. Cardiovascular disease: any of a number of conditions that damage the heart or the arteries that transport blood to and from the heart

2. Infarction: death of heart's cells due to blocked blood supply

3. Coronary heart disease: insufficient supply of blood to the heart muscle, leading to chest pain

4. Stroke: insufficient supply of blood to brain, resulting in loss of muscle function, loss of speech, and other symptoms

5. Heart attack: death of, or damage to, part of the heart resulting from insufficient blood supply

Explain the role of atherosclerosis plays in heart disease

Arteriosclerosis is the hardening of arteries, which can lead to coronary heart disease. Atherosclerosis is a form of arteriosclerosis. It's a disease process where fatty deposits (plaques) build up in the arteries and block blood flow.

Angina pectoris is chest pain caused by coronary heart disease (condition resulting from insufficient blood supply to heart muscle)

Identify and explain types of heart surgeries used to repair blocked arteries

1. Cardiac catheterization: visualization of the blocked coronary arteries through a catheter and monitoring the blood flow in the coronary arteries. A dye is injected by a catheter.

2. Coronary artery bypass surgery: surgery to improve the blood supply to the heart muscle by replacing damaged parts of the artery with a graft

3. Open-heart surgery: surgery performed on an opened heart, with the blood being diverted using a heart-lung machine

4. PTCA (percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty): procedure to open blocked arteries
