We believe in open, free and fair communities. We believe that Canada is a great country, and want to do our best to ensure that it becomes and remains a prosperous, sustainable nation, where no one is left behind. We promise to do our best to represent the voices of everyday CanadiansWe stand united

What are they doing now

The current Minister of Science is Kirsty Duncan. Her portfolio of responsibilities falls under Industry, Science and Technology is divided between herself and the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, Navdeep Bains.Currently, she has a variety of programs in place to encourage the proliferation of science in Canadian society such as CanCode, a program meant to support opportunities for coding and digital skills in students aged K-12. While the current minister is doing quite a bit, as science minister, I have some ideas on how we can make Canada the foremost country in the world when it comes to science.

Idea number 1

My first idea is an increased emphasis on the learning of STEM subjects in school. First, I'd continue to provide federal funding to encourage STEM learning. This includes supporting programs such as CanCode, which so far is only meant to continue until 2018.Additionally, I'd like to Extend the reach of STEM programs to ensure that students all across Canada have access to the programs, including aboriginal students. We at united strongly believe that everyone should have access to equal opportunities. Finally, we'd like to continue to provide support to university/college programs that encourage research in STEM fields. This includes continuing to support programs such as the Canada 150 Research Chairs program, a program currently in place to attract the worlds top scientists and innovators to enrich universities across Canada.

Idea 2

We want to help to bring Canadian innovation to the world. We plan on doing this by continuig to provide funding and support to the Build in Canada Innovation Program (BCIP), a program which allows innovators to take their innovations to market, and provides them with a credible first sale. Additionally, we'd like to increase awareness around the BCIP to help more Canadian innovations make it to the market place. Finally, we'd like to create programs that partner Canadian companies with others around the world to share research, and better the innovations of humanity.

Idea 3

Our final idea is a job program to help retrain unemployed people in STEM fields. It is expected that in the next decade or so, 40% of Canadian jobs will be lost to automation (Mckinsey Global Institute). To combat this, we propose an optional porgram to help retrain people for jobs in STEM fields. This would be similar to what the company Bit Source does in the United States. Bit Source is a company that retrains former coal miners to become coders. We propose a program similar to this to retrain Canadians whose jobs will be lost to automation. This way, we can help Canadian citizens to stay employed and keep their livelihoods.
