Another example of a pitfall of technology dependence is depicted by the sci-fi film, Summer Wars. This film, to me, was a representation of a potential future. Humans have consistently been developing new programs to automate tasks and viewing summer wars and seeing the development of computes and artificial intelligence made me realize that, while we may be hundreds of years from a society like OZ,(the completely virtually society in the film, where traffic, emergency services, banking and entrepreneurship takes place- the online society that controls the workings of the real society) we are trending to create such an environment. The automation of certain tasks will lead to a decline in availability of jobs for humans. It will take over the jobs that thrive on routine and patterns. This is usually jobs occupied by individuals with lower levels of education. By removing these career opportunities, we may create a state of mass unemployment. While we are nowhere close to developing such technologies, it is important to understand the effects that our future technologies could hold. The idea that machines are going to take over all the unpleasant jobs is striking. “Let the machine do the things that are beneath you, and take the opportunity to engage with higher-order concerns.” (Kirby, 2015) Nevertheless, the struggle arises from the dispersal of capital. The world we inhabit today, pairs jobs and income. To imagine a world where monetary compensation is not equivalent to a career, would create an idealistic society, that is highly unlikely to thrive. A guaranteed basic income would solve the social issues associated with automation to a certain extent. However, this is would be similar to a welfare system, which holds its own set of problems. The movement towards “automation everywhere” will create an increased sense of economic uncertainty, which will cause increased difficulty in tackling social issues. The issue is that things are becoming less simple than they were. Technology has reached what might be referred to as a point of change. On the one hand, technology is giving us all these great advancements, like medical discoveries or free information on the Internet. At the same time, technology may take away access to the basics, like a house and food, through the loss of a steady income to a large group of people. If we can address these issues, so everyone has access to a reasonable standard of living while enjoying the fruits of technology, we could have a very optimistic, almost utopian, future. If we don’t, for lots of people who are not economically stable, it’s going to be pretty dystopian.
