Better Than Human Summary

In the article “Better than Human: Why Robots will and Must take our Jobs” by Kevin Kelly states that automation is and will continue replacing all kinds of jobs as well as generating new ones in areas never imagined. Humans’ replacement from the workplace started two hundred years ago when the first wave of automation came out resulting in 1 percent of unemployment and hundreds of professions in new fields. Currently, industrialization develops on an extensive scale and plays a significant role not only on the job market but also on people’s life. A mechanized world in which robots “will touch all jobs, from manual labor to knowledge work” (Kelly 300) is imminent. Nonetheless, the intention of this revolution is not to get rid of humans; it is to give them a useful tool to work with. “Finding information through internet in seconds, looking for cancer cell, making computer chips, and tracking every pitch in baseball games” (Kelly 306, 307) are jobs which humans will never be able to do due to high levels of precision needed and other characteristics that human bodies do not have.
In addition, artificial intelligence has been already incorporated in machines; therefore, robots will have more abilities to perform any job or activity. Baxter is a great example of this intelligence; this smart robot can perceive humans, look around, learn processes by looking and perform them perfectly. Many other robots are being created with artificial intelligence to work alongside humans.
Third, unimaginable job opportunities will be created by automation. 150 years ago, people never imagined they could be a cartoonist, computer system or video games designers, and today, they are possible due to automation development. “The highest-earning professions in the year 2050 will depend on automations and machines that have not been invented yet” (308) Kelly
