I get the kids into the house without first slamming the door, grab my house phone and quickly dial my mother in a rage. I ask her, "What is wrong with this man, do you know what type of message he left me?" My mother goes onto say that I was wrong because I was down in NYC visiting her with the kids and neglected to stop over o my father's place. My parents had divorced seven years before, hence the separate visiting that always took a toll on me. I reply, "He told me to never speak to him again." My dad was living in a one room apartment; it was so dismal and depressing that I would do anything not to go there. I get home at 11:45 p.m. and my cell phone rings again, my hairs stood up and I looked at my fiancé and said, "Something bad happened; I know it." I picked up the phone to hear my mother who was speaking very slowly, "Danielle, something happened to your father, he is no longer with us". I will never forget how my knees buckled and I hit the floor, I can't remember much except that my fiancé had carried me to my bed and I started dialing everyone I know to pass on this horrific news. I woke up that next morning, in an utter daze. Realization had hit that person I had relied on most growing up, leaned on, talked to, was gone forever; what a pivotal point in my life. When I arrived to my mother's house I was told that the cops and fire department had to break down the door to get into that dismal apartment. My dad had been laying there for two days; apparently he had a heart attack due to his emphysema. He was not able to catch his breath while coughing, never even made it to his oxygen tank. I knew I should have just been more forceful and made him move upstate so I could keep a watchful eye on him just three months before, but the old man was set his
