It is a manifestation of our culture as well as the power of women in Philippine households. Filipino mothers are more vocal and expressive however, the choices are very much dependent to the father. It is also presented in the film that our notion of family and the “politics” inside it. It is shown in the film that the hierarchy of power in a family is distinguished by birth order. The decision-making and the capability lies in the eldest among the siblings. True enough, power inside the family is not predetermined by gender but rather by age and experience. On the other hand, the family is heavily influenced by superstitious beliefs that has no definite origin. The four siblings namely Dolores, Mameng, Syano, and Charing are believers and doers of these irrational practices. Junee, one of their siblings was forced to conform to these beliefs during the course of the film. As part of our culture, these beliefs started to govern their actions, making it as if they are rules to be followed strictly. One proof of this which was presented on the film is that family prepared food for those who are participating in the sakla and the guests. How a simple ritual of death became so complex to the point of interfering with the rest of the social system. For example, in the movie, it is given that the featured family is not rich. Therefore, it should have been expected that the wake would be kept simple. However, due to our culture of inviting guests from far away areas and our own relatives, culture somehow dictates us that we should prepare for the wake like it is a feast even though we don’t have much to give. As a consequence to this, people are capitalizing on things such as saklaan, in order to pay and return all the money lost in the preparation. The movie is ironic because it doesn’t necessarily highlights the burial and the funeral itself but rather it focuses on the behavior of the family and how they face such
