Identity can be broken down in the core concepts of an individual and minuscule details building a larger notion. Moreover, identity is not fabricated but emerges from different situations. For an immigrant identity has a huge weight. To an immigrant such as Andrea keeping her identity is far more important than adapting to the norms of society. The interviewee identified identity as “…. who you are and what you are made up of… what you believe in: your morals…”. She furthers explains throughout the interview that she feels like it’s her identity that motivates her. For instance, most immigrants have the pressure of being the first generation to attend college, being raised by a single parent, the relentless bills, the chaos of urban education. But, being raised to keep on going and never give up. The pain right now felt is only be temporary because it would convert to a fruitful harvest. Culture according to Merriam-Webster is “the beliefs, customs, arts, etc., of a particular society, group, place, or time”. The culture of any nation is a huge concept of their day to day activities. Culture is infused with every method and action done in a country such as Jamaica. But coming into a country where there is a splash of diverse and mixed customs everywhere. The culture of the new generation might be there but it’s not as strong as those who originated and experienced every attribute from the customs in a specific Caribbean country. Culture might have a huge impact to many people but not to Andrea. Her identity has contributed more than her cultural ties.
To obtain excellence in the United States an Immigrant has to have patience, perseverance and prudence. To show they are more than others perceive them to be. That their culture aids them to be more. That their burdens of arriving to a new terrain are a form of motivation to keep on going. Those burdens are a reminder of they are and want to become. Their experience transformed them into the person they are am today. To clarify, not a person who is defined by my past, but, the person who they chose to be through their experience.
