Americans carry a heavy debate about whether or not the freedom to bear arms is constitutional. On December 14, 2012, a massive shooting occurred in Sandy Hook Elementary, involving a twenty-year-old man as the perpetrator, and twenty victims were shot. The outbreak of this crisis brought a national awareness about gun rights, and if carrying guns can also be used in defense. Due to this awareness, Americans are unsure whether or not guns can be handled within the states. The Second Amendment of the United States was written by our founding Fathers stating that it was necessary to have the security of a free state, the right of the people and bear arms, and these rights should not be impose. Provided that the Second Amendment would allow these people to own guns in case of riots against the government forces based on this: “A well-regulated militia was the only form of defense compatible with liberty [and] freedom be preserved. The militia not only protected Americans from external threats such as hostile Indians and rival European powers, but in an era before organized police forces it also provided the only means to protect communities from civil unrest…and provide an essential means for organizing citizens for political action.” (Cornell 3). Notably, this amendment also caused a ruckus between the Federalists and anti-Federalists over whether the power should be decided by the state or the national government. The significance of the Second Amendment left many people in early America confused about equal protection, and the right to bear arms for natural reasons.
