When she said already, it gave me a feeling that being abuse was normal in a relationship. For a woman that was a slave and was beaten and raped, I believed that because she was black she automatically thought of deep and dark things. Usually when you are a slave, the master is allowed to yell and curse at you and able to treat you like a toy. That is why I believe Nanny was very protective and caring of Janie her whole life.

Personal Reaction: This chapter is completely different from other books at I read. I usually reads romantic novel and this is not romantic at all. This chapter brings confusion to the table. Janie is confused about love and who she is and what she wants to be. I just do not understand why she got married to somebody she does not love. What is the point? Marriage is when you give your love and life to one person for eternity. Why would she marry him? For his money? Wealth? For Nanny? She should do this act for love and for what she feels is right, not for other people’s happiness.That is why the theme for this chapter is
