For example, the Chinese Exclusion Act, which suspended immigration of Chinese labors and prohibited naturalization of those who were already residing in the United States. The Treasure Department issued some residence certificates that Chinese Americans were required to carry. Many anti-Chinese riots occurred from 1871 until 1907 in different states. Also Japanese immigrants could not become American citizens because they were prevented by law. The Irish were the first immigrant group that didn’t really fit in. It was difficult to absorb them, as they came all at once. They were also Catholics and stereotypes (drunk, violent). Being non-W.A.S.P, they were considered as a new race, just like the black people.
