“Every single day you learn something new,” Nurse Medina says, “ and if you look at everything there is usually never a double moment.” Medina works in the Emergency Room (ER) at Lenox Hill Hospital where she experiences different situations that occur in the department. Nursing isn’t as simple as it sounds. Working twelve-hour shifts with different scenarios every day is arduous for the nurse practitioner that manages the ER. Working in the ER to save a life may sound a bit cliche, “But when you can really save a life that is worth saving what I mean of worth saving is that the person will have a good outcome. Then it makes a big difference.” Working your way up to be a nurse practitioner takes a lot of commitment and education. After graduating college, Nurse Medina went to the University of Delaware with a full ride. Pristinely, she wanted to become a doctor, but she got really ill and had to leave the University. After, a year of surgery she applied to Molloy College to finish her studies. However, most of her credits weren’t received by most colleges. Nurse Medina decided to go to Molloy College because it received 30 credits out of 90. However, most of her credits received were taken as elective credits. Furthermore, Molloy College offered her to take an accelerated program in nursing. After three years of taking the accelerated program she took the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). Nurse Medina says, “At the end of your four years you are going to do the prerequisites for bachelors of science and nursing.Then you're going to take all those courses for the NCLEX exam. The NCLEX exam is what makes you a licensed nurse.” Licensing is essential for a nursing career in order to know if you’re ready to work in the department. Most hospitals want bachelor nurses in order to become “marketable”. Now hospitals want nurses to continue their education. Starting at a very young age gave her a lead with more experience and knowledge for her career. “I started nursing very young as opposed to a lot of my coworkers that started in their 20s and I started in High School, so because of that all that I really think of is the best that I can be, not like anyone else cause I know that I won’t have the skills that other people would have.” Nurse Medina says. Working in nursing homes at the age of 16 as a certified nursing assistant (CNA), then as a licensed practical nurse (LPN) at the age of 18. Getting more experience by working in clinical departments gave her more knowledge about different situations that she will experience as a nurse practitioner. She worked her way up after working, “In different places like rehab, nursing homes, or detox centers and after that I got my RN.” After working as a Registered Nurse (RN) she became a nurse practitioner after she passed the

In the ER priorities are always in place for every person in the department. “For us [it] is [putting] patient safety first, second is staff safety because it's an emergency room, third is making sure that we can have a good flow in the emergency room,” Nurse Medina says. Most people know that the ER is always hectic and busy, and the staff works around the hour to help the people coming in. Being the head staff of the ER seems difficult for one person, but Nurse Medina is always on top of her game when there is a lot of pressure. Medina says, “I perform extremely well all the time because having to allocate the patients where I have people coming in and ambulances coming in and I have to delegate transporters, clerks, nurses, nursing assistants, plus deal with the patients and know everything that's going on with every patient in the emergency room.” Being in charge of the entire ER staff and knowing all the things that are going on with the patient is extremely impressive, especially if it is on a weekday. Nurse Medina works extremely hard in ER and has earned many award throughout her years in Lenox Hill Hospital.
