In the picture above they have a little boy in a Spiderman costume pushing a baby stroller (Cole). He is surrounded by pink toys, such as the princess dress, but it does not matter. The ad is saying that a boy can play pretend to be a superhero and take care of his baby. On another page of the advertisement they have a girl riding a yellow racecar in front of a green background. This shows that girls are allowed to have other interests than playing house indoors (Cole). She is allowed to pretend she is on a racetrack about to cross the finish line, and win the championship cup. These ads can make such a difference in a person’s life. It can help children realize that they can express themselves through their imagination and it should not matter what the scenario is, from being a princess saving Batman from a disaster in the kitchen, to a pirate dressing up as a princess while they rob the town. These ads inspired the UK to push for gender equality in their ads as well once they saw the effort they were making in Sweden. Non-binary gender is a category for those who don’t identify as male or female, so they identify as genderfluid, who are flexible in their gender identity, queer those who don’t conform to binary genders, or agender those who identifies as genderless. These people aren’t being recognized in America as not female or male, so when shopping for clothes or toys they have to choose from labels and ads that say “for girls” or “for boys”. It’s discriminating to those who don’t identify as boys or girls, who’s right is it to say there are only boys and girls in this world. Society should not have the power to make certain people feel less than themselves over the way they were born. To those who are making these ads, think about the message you are sending to your children. The ads put out by these companies can make them feel uncomfortable and send the wrong message to children. Advertisements may be for a specific group of people or object, such as golfers, but the message they send out needs to be excepting of
