These are successful, well known celebrities. By hiring these celebrities, Cover Girl is using ethos to play to their audience. Since, young women tend to idolize celebrities so much, they are more likely to trust them over the average unknown person. The celebrity’s reputation and known acts give them a credibility others would not have. Their celebrity status, gives them a sense of superiority over us. This superiority makes the target audience want to be just like these women, therefore they will do whatever it is these celebrities’ say or do. The viewer has probably forgotten that too, but she has likely still been convinced that she should buy Cover Girl products. Once she has been convinced that she should take action and prove society’s assumptions wrong, it is easy to persuade her to buy Cover Girl products. As an example, all while the viewer was watching the #GirlsCan commercial, they were being influenced and motivated by these beautifully made up faces to become a consumer of the brand. By having seen the commercial, the viewer often enough may even start to associate the positive emotions induced from the advertisement with Cover Girl makeup! After all, it’s only natural that we would want to imitate their makeup in an attempt to be similar to these powerful, successful women in any way possible.
