Women have progressed in an attempt to end inequality in the labor force over the past century. Today women hold 47 percent of the labor force and 49.3 percent of jobs. Women are more likely to have 2 or more jobs and less likely to be self-employed. Something that still stands today is a gender wage gap. In 2013, the median woman working full-time all year earned 78 percent of what the median man working full-time all year earned. Multiple factors stand behind this wage gap including women choose different majors than men, Men work longer hours, women do not negotiate salaries, etc. Over the years woman have had a harder time paying off student loans do to less pay compared to their male counterparts.

• In order to increase lifelong earnings of women, policies providing sick and family leave urge women to participate in the labor force
5. Overall the wage gap increases over the employee’s career
• Young people enter careers on a similar pay scale, but overtime the gender wage gap grows
• A portion of the wage gap increases due to women taking time out of labor force and working fewer hours.
• Women negotiate less resulting in less overall earnings
• When women do negotiate earnings they generally receive less than men and are more likely to be penalized for initiating
